What happens after knee replacement surgery?

After knee replacement surgery, you will awaken in the recovery room. After 1-2 hours, you will get up with support from a physical therapist while wearing a knee brace. You should be very comfortable because of the nerve block that is given to you by an anesthesiologist before the surgery. The nurse will review care instructions with the family member or friend that will be taking you home.

In the weeks following your knee replacement surgery, you will need to exercise your knee so it doesn’t become stiff. Most patients use a walker or crutches for 1-2 weeks and then a cane for up to 4 weeks. You will go to physical therapy but will also need to do home exercises 4-6 times per day. Most patients are done with therapy at around 3 months post-op.
