INDIVIDUALIZED CARE IN RICHMOND, VA

The shoulder joint is a ball and socket joint that connects the bones of the arms to the upper body through several important ligaments, tendons, cartilage and muscles. It is the most mobile joint in the body, providing a wide range of motion that allows athletes to throw a baseball 100 miles per hour or hit a golf ball over 500 yards. Shoulder pain can range from mild to debilitating and can affect a person’s quality of life. The pain often keeps people from wanting to move the shoulder joint and this can lead to a condition known as frozen shoulder.

ROTATOR CUFF TEARS

Depending on the type of rotator cuff tear, Dr. Goradia uses minimally invasive and specialized techniques that incorporate donor tissue to support and reinforce surgical repair. These specialized techniques promote and accelerate healing after surgery.

SHOULDER LABRAL TEARS

A tear in the labrum can cause pain, weakness, limited range of motion and instability leading to more frequent dislocations. A labral repair surgery is performed arthroscopically and involves attaching the labrum to the bone.

ARTHROSCOPIC SURGERY FOR SHOULDER ARTHRITIS

If a patient has been diagnosed with arthritis in the shoulder, there are nonsurgical treatment options such as injections, physical therapy and anti-inflammatory medications that can be considered before arthroscopic surgery. If nonsurgical treatments do not relieve pain, arthroscopic surgery can help eliminate the frayed cartilage that can cause impingement issues and pain.

TOTAL SHOULDER REPLACEMENT SURGERY

Replacing a joint is generally reserved for patients experiencing the advanced arthritic condition of bone on bone function which causes extreme pain and very limited mobility and use. The Outpatient Shoulder Replacement Program allows patients to return home the same day as shoulder replacement surgery to recover in the comfort of home while remaining in regular contact with Dr. Goradia.

REVERSE SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

The reverse shoulder replacement surgery enables patients who have a massive rotator cuff tear to use the deltoid muscle to help regain a normal range of motion.

LEARN MORE

OUTPATIENT SHOULDER REPLACEMENT

Shoulder replacement surgery can be offered as an outpatient procedure for patients who are considered low risk for complications. Patients eligible for this type of surgery will have access to a physical therapist and a nurse who will ensure that the patient is progressing well during recovery.

SHOULDER PAIN TREATMENT

POSSIBLE CAUSES OF SHOULDER PAIN:

A condition that occurs when the small fluid-filled sacs within a joint become inflamed and painful. Conservative measures such as steroid injection therapy can successfully treat bursitis in the shoulder.

Tendonitis is an inflammation of the tendons connecting the muscles to the bones in the shoulder. It most often occurs in the rotator cuff or biceps due to overuse and injury. Depending on the severity of the swelling and inflammation, tendonitis can usually be treated with conservative measures such as rest and physical therapy.

Impingement Syndrome occurs when the rotator cuff tendons and bursa are squeezed under the shoulder blade. This typically happens as a result of bone spurs, injury, repetitive overhead lifting or muscle weakness. Impingement Syndrome causes bursitis and/or tendonitis which often leads to shoulder pain. Impingement conditions can usually be treated with conservative measures. If pain continues Dr. Goradia may recommend arthroscopic surgery to remove the swollen bursa sac and/or to remove bone spurs.

A rotator cuff tear is quite simply a tear of your shoulder’s rotator cuff tendons. A rotator cuff tear can occur in three ways – sports injury, trauma or repetitive overuse. Rotator cuff tears can be repaired through minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures. Dr. Goradia has developed a new surgical technique for massive rotator cuff tears that have poor tissue quality or are severely retracted and scarred.

The ligaments within the shoulder connect the bones together and can become damaged as a result of trauma or overuse. Ligament issues can usually be treated with conservative measures.

The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint which connects the ball at the top of the arm to the socket within the shoulder blade. Shoulder dislocation is an injury in which the ball at the upper part of the arm pops out of the socket in the shoulder blade causing pain, swelling and immobility of the shoulder. Immediate medical treatment is required.

Shoulder arthritis is less common than arthritis in other joints. In general, shoulder arthritis is better tolerated than arthritis in the hip or knee because you don’t put all of your body weight on your shoulders. In cases where the arthritis does become severe, a shoulder replacement can restore smooth, pain free movement of the joint. In the case of mild arthritis in the shoulder, arthroscopic surgery may be recommended as a minimally invasive treatment.

REAL SUCCESS STORIES

Don’t just take our word for it – listen to what your neighbors have to say about our nationally recognized care team.

“Simply the BEST ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON, in the Richmond Tri-city areas. I had chronic pain and started to lose mobility in my shoulder for about 6 months. Dr G listened to my concerns about upcoming sporting plans and he was able to get the MRI, surgery and therapy all to fit my timeline. The G2 staff made the process feel smooth and they did this just to get me back on the field coaching. After my surgery I had very little bruising and back at work in three days. A couple of weeks later I felt so good I was just amazed at my healing progress. 4 months later I’m back completely healed no pain and working out again. Great Ortho doctor and he has won my trust through his excellence as a surgeon. A++”

“Excellent Doctor. In 3 months and 2 weeks, a shoulder that was said that could not be fixed for the past 16 years is now able to be raised completely straight up in the air. With this total complete reverse shoulder replacement, I am getting part of my life back from the loss of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

The staff and physical therapy solutions have been wonderful as well.

Thank you Dr. Goradia so much!!”

“I have been suffering with shoulder pain for more than a year. I went to an orthopedic doctor who told me it was a slight tear in my rotator cuff and gave me a steroid shot. It wasn’t any help at all. My chiropractor recommended Dr. Goradia. I called and was able to get an appointment quickly. He did an xray and immediately said you have a frozen shoulder. We tried physical therapy and it wasn’t progressing. He scheduled the manipulation surgery quickly for me. The process went very smoothly. I am so thankful for what he has done for me. My pain afterwards has been nothing compared to before. I highly recommend Dr. Goradia. Alex at the front desk is very personable and polite.”
