The hip joint is a ball and socket synovial joint designed to support the weight of the body during standing as well as during physical activities such as walking and running. POSSIBLE CAUSES OF HIP PAIN:

The shock absorbing tissue, known as cartilage, can become damaged over time from regular wear and tear and from degenerative conditions such as arthritis, and causing pain limited mobility.

The labrum is a structure made of cartilage that provides support and stability within the hip joint. Labral tears can be repaired through minimally invasive arthroscopic procedures.

The ligaments within the hip connect the bones together and can become damaged as a result of trauma or overuse. Ligament issues can usually be treated with conservative measures.

A condition that occurs when the small fluid filled sacs within the joint become inflamed and painful. Conservative measures such as steroid injection therapy can successfully treat bursitis in the hip.

The hip flexor which runs across the front of the hip consists of muscle and tendon and can be injured during sporting activities. Conservative measures work well to treat this type of tendon injury.

The joint that joins the pelvis to the sacrum known as the sacroiliac joint can be treated with targeted injection therapies to minimize pain and discomfort.

Pain in the buttocks during sitting or certain activities is usually indicative of piriformis syndrome. This can cause pain that radiates down the leg as well as the hip area and a thorough examination can help distinguish piriformis syndrome from other muscle and nerve injuries.

Sometimes, with very ballistic motions in and around the hip, occasionally the tendon can pull off of the bone, taking a small piece of bone with it. These are called avulsion fractures. When this occurs, many times this will heal with a period of rest, rehabilitation and observation. If the tendon has pulled far enough away from its origin on the bone, occasionally we will have to repair this.
