Category II CME & Board Requirements

**Time spent on course eligible for CME II credit**

The Virginia Board of Medicine requires 60 CME hours every two years. Up to 30 CME hours may be AMA PRA Category 2™. All other states have similar requirements. Physicians should keep in mind the credit requirements of various entities when deciding how long to keep records of their CME activities. Licensing boards, medical specialty certifying boards, hospital medical staff and others may have different reporting requirements.

A physician must individually assess the educational value for each learning experience in which they participate to determine if it is appropriate to claim AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™.

AMA Definition of CME: CME consists of educational activities that maintain, develop, or increase the knowledge, skills, and professional performance and relationships that a physician uses to provide services for patients, the public or the profession. The content of CME is the body of knowledge and skills generally recognized and accepted by the profession as within the basic medical sciences, the discipline of clinical medicine and the provision of health care to the public.

As with live activities, physicians should claim credit based on their participation time with 60 minutes of participation equal to one (1) AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™; this credit is claimed in 15 minute or 0.25 credit increments, and physicians must round to the nearest quarter-hour.
