Ankle Fractures

An ankle fracture is an injury to one or more of the ankle bones. This can occur from rolling your ankle or a direct impact to an ankle bone such as with a bad fall. The severity of the fracture will depend on how many of the ankle bones are affected by the injury. Fractures are common for people of all ages, particularly athletes such as soccer players and pointe dancers who have a higher risk of rolling their ankles.

Treatment Options for Ankle Fractures

Treatment options for any given ankle fracture will depend entirely upon the individual patient’s case. There are multiple factors that impact the proper treatment of an ankle fracture, such as the amount of fracture displacement, a patient’s level of activity, and overall health. In the majority of cases the x-ray is all that is needed to make a treatment decision. Imaging such as MRI or CT scans may be ordered in special circumstances.

It is important to discuss your options with your surgeon directly after a fracture is identified to ensure you receive the best possible treatment for your injury. In some instances, fractures may be treated with a cast or boot and crutches. In others, surgical repair may be the proper course treatment for you.
